The downriver community of Wyandotte on Saturday kicks off restaurant week with a new twist.  Along with restaurants, the waterfront community is including its downtown retail stores and highlighting the city's newly established "social district."

Wyandotte's Restaurant & Retail Week gives restaurants and retailers an opportunity to dine out at the Wyandotte restaurants and shop at its assortment of retail stores. Wyandotte's variety of retail stores include clothing stores, art galleries and boutiques and specialty shops.

One of the latest additions to Wyandotte's restaurant scene is The Vault at the corner of  First and Maple near the city's clock tower. Located in the former National Bank of Wyandotte building which later became Charter Bank for many years, The Vault opened Thursday. Its menu has a wide range of offerings including gluten-free and vegan dishes.

Other downtown restaurants include Bobcat Bonnie's gastropub which reopened lat November after being completely remodeled along with new menu offering. There's also Magdaleno Ristorante, Nanna's Kitchen and Sushi Bar.

Several participating restaurants will have special menu offerings or pricing for the week that runs through April 24.

"It's a celebration of the brick and mortar businesses in Wyandotte," Joe Gruber, executive director of Wyandotte’s Downtown Development Authority said of the week-long event. "Having the social district promotes walkability and shows how businesses work together and coexist in the district."

Gruber added that the social district also shows how businesses support each other.

In Wayne county, only three communities have social districts: Belleville, Grosse Pointe Park and Northville. The law is an effort to give bars and restaurants, while customers maintain social distancing.

Operating since St. Patrick's Day in Wyandotte, the social district was made possible by a new state law signed last summer permitting drinking alcohol in specifically marked containers and in areas between licensed establishments.
