Aldi has revealed when it plans to open its new store in Tarleton with building work due to begin later this year.

The discount retailer is set to build its latest store on a site near Tarleton Business Park by the junction of Liverpool Road and Southport Road.

It will mean demolishing the 17th century building which was most recently used as the Bay Leaf Indian restaurant to make way for the new development. The building, which now lies in a decrepit and crumbling state, was previously used as the Ram’s Head pub.

Aldi has been planning to build on the site since 2018 and first received planning permission to build its store in 2020, only to submit a new and slightly modified proposal which was granted in March.

As part of the plan, local logistics firm GBA Services will build new offices on the same land, allowing it to increase its workforce without having to leave the area.

Earlier this year, the Co-operative Group was forced to pay £18,000 to West Lancashire Borough Council after losing a challenge against the decision to grant planning permission to a new Aldi superstore.

The Co-op took the matter to a judicial review over alleged failures by a planning officer in the preparation of a report given to councillors responsible for making the decision. The grounds of complaint put forward by the Co-op was split into eight sub-grounds but Mr Justice Holgate, the judge determining the challenge, found that none of those had any merit and dismissed it.

Agreement was reached with the Co-op and the council was awarded its full costs in defending the claim, amounting to £18,103.30.

Aldi has previously remained tight-lipped about when the store would open but now says it plans to begin trading in a little over a year.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We will begin construction of our new Tarleton store later this year and plan to open the store in the summer of 2022. This will create up to 40 jobs and enable local people to shop and save closer to home.”
