Plans for a new Dunkin' restaurant at the intersection of Routes 261 and 43 in Kent continue to move forward.

Kent City Council approved a motion allowing the city to accept a street right of way dedication at 1625 South Water Street. That parcel, located near the intersection where a new Dunkin' Donuts is planned.

Kent Community Development Director Bridget Susel explained that often when private development moves forward, a survey of the property will show that the parcel extends into the roadway. Typically, that part of the parcel is dedicated back the city as it is already being maintained by city crews.

Plans for the new Dunkin' Donuts are currently undergoing a technical plan review. During an August 2020 meeting, owner Ken Bloom told the Kent Planning Commission that he hopes to open the new coffee and donut shop in 2021. The first Dunkin' location he opened in Kent, located on East Main Street, has been open for nearly a decade.

Previous plans showed the new building with a drive thru and operating daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Up to eight employees would be hired to work there.

A handful of residents voiced concern about creating more congestion near the intersection. In 2018, the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study identified 261 and 43 as one of the most dangerous intersections in the city. Kent Superintendent of Engineering Jim Bowling previously said that studies have shown the area's problems to be related to speed.

About 50% of the traffic going to the new building, once completed, is expected to come from people already on the road
