KFC is kicking off its partnership with Meals on Wheels America this month, supporting the organization's Making Good Go Further initiative to feed seniors in need.

Through the partnership, KFC U.S. corporate and franchisees around the country will donate 1 million pieces of boneless, skinless chicken breast to local Meals on Wheels affiliates. The food is destined for housebound seniors, but franchisees can also make donations directly to local senior centers and nursing homes.

“Seniors have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic, with social distancing efforts contributing to increased isolation, loneliness and despair,” Staci Rawls, KFC U.S. chief communications officer, said in a statement. “We want to do our part to help ensure the safety and well-being of older adults during this difficult time, and Meals on Wheels America has the support system in place to reach seniors in need.”

Food insecurity has long impacted this population, but the pandemic exacerbated the issue for older Americans. Seventy-nine percent of Meals on Wheels programs reported that demand for services had at least doubled, and some saw increases of over 900%.

The chicken chain is also doing its part to recognize Meals on Wheels volunteers. The company is donating 11,000 KFC gift cards (in honor of the Colonel’s famous 11 Herbs & Spices), redeemable at participating restaurant locations nationwide.

KFC’s support of the Making Good Go Further initiative runs through May.
