An Indian restaurant, hailed as "the best for miles" has closed down after 15 years in business.

Akbar Balti, in Derby Road, Stapleford, had been serving takeaways during lockdown and blamed the impact of the pandemic for the closure.

The decision was posted on the restaurant's Facebook page: "We regret to inform you that we have decided to close our doors permanently due to the Covid pandemic.

"We would like to thank all of the customers that have dined with us or ordered from us over the 15 years we have been in business. We could not have been as successful as it was without your loyalty. Hoping all our amazing customers stay safe through 2021."

Regulars said they were saddened by the news. One said: "It was definitely the best Indian for miles. It is a shame, so many businesses have fallen in these very trying times."

Others said it was their go-to restaurant for anniversary and birthday meals out.

Firefighter Kevin Tedds, who lives in the town, said: "I am sad to see them go as I thought they might get through the Covid pandemic, as it always seems so busy and popular.

"I’ve had some great times there, my 20-year medal celebrations, birthdays, you name it. The lads who work there are brilliant and the food amazing. I used to joke with the lads at work, saying that if I didn’t ring Akbar’s once a month, they’d ring me to see if I was okay.

"I am sad they didn’t make it though, I know lots of people will miss them too".

Stapleford councillor Richard MacRae said: "I'm so sad to read it is closing. I wish them the best for the future. Like many people I have had many a meal from this fine establishment in Stapleford and always enjoyed the wonderful food.

"It is a great location and I hope once gone the building will be taken up by one of the many people who have great ideas for Stapleford. You often see people say they want a shoe shop, clothes shop, toy shop or a newsagents, well now is the opportunity for them to open such a business in Stapleford."
