A burger joint has opened in Tynemouth Surf Cafe.

East Coast Burgers at Surf Cafe serves a range of gourmet burgers and sides. Initially, it is open for take out only due to the lockdown, but customers will be welcome to sit in once restrictions are eased.

Surf Café’s venue manager, Rich Southern, explains: “I'm hugely excited to launch East Coast Burgers at the Surf Cafe. Our head chef and the team have put an awful lot of work and research into the burger concepts and it'll be immensely satisfying to see people tucking in and enjoying their creations.

“While there might be a temptation to batten down the hatches, reduce hours and offer less during these times, we wanted to go the opposite direction and offer people more.”

Head chef Jon Nellist developed the East Coast menu over the past few months.

“I’ve always been inspired by American food,” said John , formerly of Lola Jean's, Butterfly Cabinet, Longhorns and The Cluny.

"It’s something I’ve been drawn to throughout my years as a professional chef. “I’m big into blues, soul and big gatherings. There’s nothing better than cooking for a big amount of people with music, laughter and love in the room!”

“With the winter days coming and live music still on hold, we felt we had to do something really special with our menu to encourage people to brave the cold.”

“A lot of research, planning and effort has gone into this menu. I’ve done taste tests of other burgers in the area and I’ve spent hours and hours experimenting with different blends of burger patties, toppings and bun combinations,” continues John.

“It’s amazing how far down the burger-making rabbit hole you can go, but in the end the taste test has the final say and I’m extremely happy with what we have.”

Surf Cafe closed briefly in 2019 but reopened in 2020, in challenging circumstances. The food, drink and music venue overlooking Longsands Beach in Grand Parade, Tynemouth has added outdoor firepits to make customers more comfortable outside. The new lockdown means it's take-away only for now, but sit-in and sit-outside customers should be able to return in December if the lockdown is lifted as planned.

Rich added: “Since opening on July 2, we have had several big changes to Covid-19 guidelines which have directly impacted the hospitality sector. It’s definitely been a baptism of fire, but I couldn't be happier with the work we've done since reopening and the reception we've received from the community.

“Our job was to reassure people that the Surf Café spirit was still very much there and to demonstrate that we had kept everything people loved about it whilst adding the TLC to the areas where it was needed.

“The success of Surf Café this summer just goes to show how well-loved the venue is and how open-minded the public were to embracing positive change.”
