A driver smashed into the parklet at Napper Tandy, an Irish pub and restaurant in San Francisco's Mission District, Monday night, police said.

The San Francisco Police Department responded to the incident at 24th Street and South Van Ness Avenue at approximately 6:35 p.m. They identified the male driver and found two people had been struck by the vehicle.

The pedestrians were transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The initial investigation found that impairment due to the drugs or alcohol wasn't a factor in the incident, according to police.

The adult driver was cited for a lane violation, specifically vehicle code 21658 (a) CVC, according to a statement from SFPD. While police couldn't comment on the exact maneuver that led to the crash, motorists cited for this violation typically either drive a car over a yellow line for an extended period of time or straddle a line.

San Francisco resident John Angelico was near the scene of the incident when it occurred. "I heard the sound of the wooden structure kinda crunch up during the crash," Angelico wrote in a statement. "It didn’t seem to destroy it completely but I saw later pix and it had been removed. I guess it was totaled."

The Napper Tandy opted to not comment on the incident.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, many cities including San Francisco have allowed and encouraged restaurants to build parklets to accommodate outdoor dining. These built-out dining spaces that take over parking spaces have been a bright spot for many in a difficult year, but they are susceptible to cars crashing into them.

In Santa Barbara, a parklet shattered when an RV ploughed into it last week. An SUV rammed a parklet in Alameda last month, injuring two adults. Officers determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol, according to KRON.
