A South American restaurant is set to return to Birmingham's business district just weeks after announcing its closure.

Fazenda has agreed new terms with its landlord for its site at 55 Colmore Row, meaning it will reopen on May 17 in line with the Government's roadmap out of the coronavirus lockdown.

Last month, parent company City District was bought out of administration in a pre-pack deal by its owners via a new company called Southern Wind which saved four sites but resulted in the closure of its venues in Birmingham and Chester.

At the time, the owners said they were hopeful of returning to Birmingham in the future at an alternative location but they are now able to stay in the historic building they have occupied since launching in autumn 2018.

Fazenda and sister brand Picanha by Fazenda specialise in the rodizio-style of service where cuts of meat are regularly brought to diners' tables for a set price.

It was one of several such venues to open in Birmingham city centre in recent years but administrators from Begbies Traynor said last month the business had been hit by the coronavirus lockdown, resulting in a "significant build-up of landlord and HMRC arrears".

This could no longer be serviced without additional funding, Begbies said. The deal to reopen in Colmore Row has saved 43 jobs.

Managing director Tomás Maunier said: "It's been an extremely tough few weeks though we are delighted beyond words to have finally reached an agreement with the landlord and to be able to retain the jobs of our Birmingham team.

"Our priority as a business has been to save as many jobs as possible so today is a day of huge celebration - one of those moments that makes you really happy as a business leader.

"Before the pandemic hit, the restaurant was trading exceptionally well and the team we have built has made a big impression on the people of Birmingham.

"The level of support and expression of disappointment at the closure news, from both the business and wider community, was incredible. That's why we knew we would have to return one way or another."

Chief executive Terence Langley added: "We've worked hard to reach a conclusive agreement through a lot of negotiation.

"While it's disappointing that we didn't manage to reach agreements earlier, we are thrilled to have secured the jobs of our Birmingham team.
