Being Vaccinated Doesn't Make Restaurant Outings Safe Yet

If you’ve managed to get vaccinated, you’re probably excited to go do a bunch of the things you’ve been avoiding for the past year. And yes, you can finally visit an unvaccinated friend without having to wear masks, for example. But please, don’t take that friend out to lunch.

People are forgetting things in their haste to get back to “normal” (and things aren’t going to be truly normal for a good long while, to be honest). And topping the list of thing people seem to be forgetting is the fact that places have staff. And other patrons.

We saw this throughout the pandemic, too. Remember when Kim Kardashian flew her friends and family to a private island after asking “everyone” to quarantine? The photos confirm that parties don’t throw themselves; at least one (masked) staff member is visible in the background of what appears to be a dinner. Politicians have also removed masks (or argued that others should remove masks) when “nobody” is around, not counting others still around them, such as photographers.

If you are vaccinated and come into contact with a person who is not, that scenario is relatively safe for you. It’s also relatively safe for the unvaccinated person, unless they are at high risk for complications, in which case the CDC recommends that you both wear masks.

And the CDC guidelines are clear, and they agree with common sense, in stating that your status as a vaccinated person does not make it safe to bring unvaccinated people from different households into contact with each other.

When you bring an unvaccinated friend to a restaurant, that friend is now sharing air with the waitstaff and with other diners. (Yes, even if you are in a little sidewalk tent. Your server still has to enter to serve you.) Your server should be wearing a mask, but masks only reduce risk. They do not entirely eliminate it, and your server is already encountering dozens of unmasked customers every day.

Restaurant workers should be getting vaccinated soon in many states, if they haven’t already, but you can’t and shouldn’t assume that they have gotten their vaccines already.

You also don’t know who is high risk just from looking at them; some of those staff may be unable to get vaccines for various reasons, either due to availability or due to their own health conditions. The same applies to other patrons at the restaurant or people you’d encounter at other locations where you’d like to have outings. You don’t know who’s vaccinated, and you don’t know who’s high risk.

Eventually, enough people will be vaccinated that the specifics won’t matter. Vulnerable people will be protected by the simple fact that case counts are low and most folks around them will be immune. That’s the idea behind herd immunity, and we almost certainly will get there—but we’re not there yet.
