EUREKA — A legendary Eureka restaurant has gone out of business.

The last day of operation for The Chanticleer was Thursday, according to a release issued that night.

Chanticleer owners Jeff and Michelle Stahl cited lingering effects from the coronavirus pandemic. Those included new dining restrictions and food-price increases.

The Stahls also alluded to difficulties in filling employment vacancies.

"Michelle and I have tried to create a hospitality experience that we couldn't find other places," Jeff Stahl stated. "However, over the course of the last year and a half, circumstances have presented themselves, creating challenges that have prevented this from happening."

When the Journal Star contacted Jeff Stahl, he declined to comment.

Located at 744 N. Main St. at the north edge of Eureka, The Chanticleer had been open for decades. The Stahls purchased it in 2011.

Fabled for its fried chicken and onion rings, the Stahls added modern touches to the menu. Blackened chicken pasta, brisket macaroni and cheese and a chipotle barbecue bacon hamburger were among featured entrees.

The Chanticleer attracted diners from well beyond the Woodford County seat, including Peoria and Bloomington-Normal.

A sale of dishware, furniture and kitchen items is to take place beginning Wednesday and continuing until June 6 at the restaurant. Chanticleer gift cards will be honored.

Catering events that already have been booked also will be honored. The Stahls will continue to solicit new catering clients.

"Michelle and I are heartbroken to close The Chanticleer but know the city of Eureka will prosper without us," Jeff Stahl state
