A Mercer County town is practicing what it’s preaching by supporting its local restaurants with heating costs in a new program as winter approaches.

The Hamilton Township Council approved the creation of a new propane support program on Tuesday designed to help local restaurants purchase and refill their propane tanks.

The program, funded by the Community Development Block Grant, includes the availability of $20,000 in assistance.

“The Propane Support Program is yet another innovative way for Hamilton to connect with our local restaurants and provide them with financial resources during these challenging times,” Mayor Jeff Martin said in a release.

The town can purchase propane tanks at a discounted rate through a partnership with Yardville Supply Company and Mercer Ace Hardware. It will also allow restaurants to refill the tanks for the same price.

Restaurants interested in participating must register with the township and email kkane@hamiltonnj.com with the following information: the name of the business, contact information (name, phone, email), and an approximate number of tanks the business typically goes through in a week.

“Council supports the Mayor’s action,” Council President Richard Tighe said in a release. “Thank you to Yardville Supply and Ace Hardware for joining this effort. This is another example of how our community continues to come together to help each other through these tough times.”
