Declaring that Maryland had crossed into a danger zone with the surging coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Larry Hogan imposed further restrictions Tuesday on bars and restaurants to help control the spread of COVID-19.

Hogan (R) said that all Maryland restaurants and bars must operate at no more than 50 percent capacity and warned state residents about gathering in groups of 25 or more and traveling to other parts of the country with rising numbers of coronavirus cases.

The new restrictions go into effect 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Frederick County bars and restaurants are already operating at no more than 50 percent capacity under County Executive Jan Gardner's (D) order. Other jurisdictions in the state have been permitting 75 percent capacity, though that'll no longer be allowed by Wednesday evening.

The latest round of restrictions were announced as the Maryland Department of Health reported more than 1,000 new COVID-19 infections statewide for a seventh consecutive day.

The 1,338 new cases reported Tuesday brought the overall number of confirmed cases in Maryland to 156,709. That includes 5,257 cases in Frederick County, which saw an increase of 46 cases Tuesday.
